Self-Reflection
This sounds like a pretty interesting job. It would be fun to solve mysteries every day, but I would not like to work with dead people. I like to talk with people and form a relationship with them. I don’t think I could deal with the gruesome scenes and harsh reality of the side of our world. I like to not know about the details of those terrible crimes. This job would not be for me.
I put this career journal in my portfolio because at the moment I don't want to be a Medical Examiner, but it is one of the more realistic options compared to the other careers I have researched. It would be a good paying job, and I like to figure things out. I like a challenge, and this job would give me problems everyday that I would have to solve. The job availability of a medical examiner is pretty good. I went online and a bunch of openings came up. At the beginning of the year when we investigated the scene of Anna's death, I learned what to look for and how to test the findings. Throughout the year we also get autopsy reports, which have taught me how to find clues from the body. This class has slightly touched on what this job would entail, but it is enough to give me an idea of what I would have to do as a Medical Examiner.
Education and/or Training Required
- In college one should focus on the principles behind pathology, chemistry, biology, and physics.
- Must earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO).
- Students may choose a major anywhere in the medical field.
- Must enter a residency program in pathology and forensic pathology.
- currently a 5 year process
- After residency is complete you may take the exam.
- All of this generally takes 8-13 years of schooling to become a medical examiner.
Responsibilities and Daily Activities
- Some of their duties take place at the crime scene, the rest will take place in the facility or lab.
- They may also be called to court and must testify in a trial.
- At the crime scene they might:
- Examine and document the victims injuries, wounds, etc.
- Identify the person
- Collect remains and the body
- Transport the body to a morgue most likely for an autopsy
- They will have to work with law enforcement, detectives, etc. on the case
- In the lab they might:
- Perform autopsies
- if they were not able to identify the person at the crime scene they would do that at the lab.
- In lab they also document and examine the injuries on the victim.
- Collect trace evidence.
- Here they determine the manner of death.
- Natural, suicide, homicide, accidental, or undetermined.

Self-Reflection
An endocrinologist’s job sounds very interesting. The human body and how it works is a fascinating thing. I wouldn’t mind being a doctor. I had thought of that option while I was thinking about what college to go to last year. The one thing that bothered me the most was being in school for ten or more years. That didn't sound very appealing to me. Also the schooling is very difficult. Another thing I had thought about was how much I would have to work. Doctors work very long hours in the beginning of their careers and sometimes throughout their whole careers, and I want to possibly work part time if and when I have a family of my own. Therefore and endocrinologist would not be the right job for me.
I chose this career to be put in my portfolio because I would love to become a doctor. An endocrinologist would be very interesting because it would allow me to help make people feel better. If I were to become a doctor, I may choose a different area like a pediatrician, but out of the ones I wrote journals on, this one seemed the most interesting. The job outlook on this career isn't terribly bad, but if you can get through the schooling you will be able to find a job. Doctors are always needed everywhere in the world, the schooling is the hardest part. Learning about diabetes has taught me about just one of the many diseases that can occur in the body. Knowing how it works, and what people do to treat it, has taught me a little bit of what an endocrinologist would have to do on a daily basis with a ton of other diseases and many patients. The road to being an endocrinologist would be tough, but if I could survive it I wouldn't mind being a doctor.
Education and/or Training Required
- Earn a bachelor’s degree
- Apply to med school
- Complete 4 year med school program

- After all of this is completed they must obtain a state license
- United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)
- May also become certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine
- Voluntary: requires passing an exam
- Must complete self-evaluations and continue medical education to maintain their credentials
Responsibilities and Daily Activities
- Specialize in the function of glands that produce and release hormones
- Diagnose and treat disorders of the glands
- Most of the disorders are life-long
- With patients throughout their lives
- Must understand treating and managing these disorders
- Must be able to help patients cope with the physical limitations from the diseases
- Such as diabetes and hypothyroidism
- May have to order test and prescribe medication

CLINICAL GENETICIST

Self-Reflection
The field of genetics is growing very quickly and is full of mysteries waiting to be uncovered. I have thought about going into this field, but it requires a lot of lab work. I don’t really think the lab is for me at the moment, I like to work directly with people, but it still interests me. I will not totally say no, I will never have a job in the field of genetics because sometimes life leads you to things you never would have guessed, but at the moment I still want to be a PT. Genetics are our future and there is so much to find out about them, so I am still very interested in it all.
I choose a Clinical Geneticist to put in my career journal portfolio because this field is very fascinating to me. In school I have not had the chance to learn that much about it, but BioMed has given me a greater understanding of its incredible ability on life. Finding a job in genetics is not hard at all. It is a growing field, and the future of the health field will be based on genetics and all of the research that is going on now. BioMed has taught me how the basics of genetics work and how you can find mutations in the genetic code of a person to diagnose them with a disease. I have a passion for working with people, sports and exercise, so I would still like to go into physical therapy due to my interests, but I won't completely rule out genetics. As I continue my education, I may come across something that sparks my interest in genetics that may change my mind on a career, but it hasn't yet, therefore I will stay on the track towards physical therapy.
